What’s Happening at Solid Ground

Gabby’s Story, Breakfast Speaker 2026

“I’m standing here today because of Solid Ground and because of the people in this room who believe that every family deserves a safe place to call home.”

Gabby, a lifelong resident of St. Paul, stands as an example of how community support can transform lives. Her journey has been far from easy. Eight years ago, the father of Gabby’s children passed away. “When I lost him, I lost myself. He had taken care of so much: making the kids’ doctor’s appointments, talking to the landlord, paying the rent, and doing the grocery shopping. I went to work. That was my role.”

After his death, anxiety overwhelmed her. She stopped working, her children struggled to attend school, and eventually, the family became homeless. For nearly two years, they moved from place to place, often staying with a family member who threatened to evict them. Gabby sank into a deep depression, at times feeling hopeless. Still, her three children gave her a reason to keep going.

One day, help came by way of her children’s school, where staff members who knew the family encouraged her to connect with Solid Ground. Through this referral, Gabby was introduced to a family advocate who helped her navigate resources and secure housing.

“She helped me find housing. She helped my kids get connected with therapists. And when we didn’t have transportation to get the kids to school, Solid Ground helped set up van rides every morning and afternoon.”

The support didn’t end there. Solid Ground provided things like winter coats, holiday meals, and essential supplies. Most importantly, her family advocate helped her rebuild her confidence. “She helped me get comfortable doing all the things I’d let go of. Little by little, I started to feel like myself again.”

Now, Gabby has lived in her apartment for over a year, consistently paying rent early. She loves her job as a case worker at Job Corps, mentoring young women and helping them navigate challenges, just as others once helped her. Gabby is proud of her sobriety and the progress she has made.

Her focus now is on continuing to grow, supporting her children, and being a steady, positive presence both at home and in her work. She is proud of her children and hopeful for their futures. “My kids rode through my storm with me, and it wasn’t at all easy for them. I’m so proud of the people they are becoming, and I want them to step into rooms I never dreamed I would be in. I want them to experience everything life has to offer.”

Someone recently asked her what home means to her. She immediately replied “My kids and my dog. Coming home after a long day and not having to wonder if we’re going to get put out. Not having to worry that some argument is going to get us kicked to the curb. Just being able to get in bed, turn on the TV, and be home. That is everything.”

Reflecting on her journey, Gabby credits her community, her children’s school and the Solid Ground team, for helping her rebuild her life. Their support, she believes, is the true meaning of community in action.
